(This is part of a storyline called The Society Strikes, which is part of a larger private story arc. Private meaning that it takes place away from public space.)

In the basement of Elramir’s Arathi Highland stronghold. (Elramir is a powerful magi brought back from lichdom with twisted magic that required the sacrifice of a thousand people. He's bad news.)

Two cells six feet wide, nine feet deep, that ran from floor to ceiling, and sat side by side in an indented part of a stone wall. Thick plates of metal protected the floor, ceiling, and floor from the occupants therein. The two cells shared a common barred wall, allowing the captives to reach into the others’ cages, but invisible spell barriers that prevented hands from extending out their cell doors. Each cell had a bed with a sink-toilet combination at the foot of the bed by the back wall.

This is a sort of bare bones version of my RP etiquette guide thing that I've written and rewritten over the years, but this is free of all the explaining and elaboration. I spewed this on a project discord. I have a discourse written for each chunk of the thing.

It lacks stuff like "attention economy" or red flags of abuse or how to deal with harassment. I think that's a diff part of the guide, whereas the stuff here focuses on Etiquette.

Of course this site ate all my pretty indentations and line breaks. Gonna have to dash it up. Crai it looks ugly.

Long before the age of WOW, on a mu* of sorts, a fledgling roleplay community was dropped in my lap. Now at that time I was still young, in high school, where I had held student government offices all four years there. We already had a small member base and we set out on development, taking our little place from a small pocket to creating our own whole world separate from the assumed loose-knit moderated continuity (story world) of the mud. All users were permitted to make their own worlds within the world and basically do whatever they want. The group that fell in my control did okay for a number of years, over half a decade. My overall experience was that the community dumped in my lap wound up becoming a successful, largely healthy and long lasting RP community and I did a number of things that helped with the success of the group.

You spend a ton of time developing your character, including strengths and weaknesses, then you get into RP combat either with another player, or are running in a group with a storyteller or dungeon master, and you make a pose, something your character is well-practiced at and the you see the dreaded phrase on your screen, "Roll 20."

RNJesus hates you. You roll a 1. Your character fails at something they should be really good at. And it happens again and again and again. Meanwhile another player hasn't developed his or her character with any sort of limitations and is getting good rolls and is rolling high numbers.

There's a part of it that's infuriating because people who haven't balanced their character seem to get rewarded while you, having given your character balance and having stuck to making your character do things that they should be able to do have been left with a character that looks like a completely incompetent nincompoop. You aren't having fun but you don't say anything because everyone else seems to push this idea of "d20 is the greatest thing since sliced bread!"

Rolling dice works in pen and paper RPGs because there are statistics, character sheets, and modifiers. Trying to maintain those things in WOW can be arguably fraught unless you can find or program an addon that will do it for you. People use it because it's a simple solution, but it isn't a good solution.

Another problem is when people make these poses that are impossible, not impossible in the fun cool running up the walls because you're a badass way, but in the whole the body doesn't bend that way sort of way, and it screws with suspension of disbelief when they get a lucky roll.

What if I told you there was another way to have dice in your RP without stats, character sheets, or pissing your character's strengths and weaknesses to the wind in favor of RNJesus?
